The movie was shot entirely on green screens to allow them to have the foreground be completely separate from the background and thus the two can always be fully in focus simultaneously, just like in anime and not unlike the story structure. In order to tell such a sprawling story where all events unfold seemingly at once, condensing space and time, the Wachowskis had to take full advantage of Speed Racer's origins as an anime, using every aesthetic choice from that medium to their full advantage. But those decisions are his to make, regardless of the past, and they make him who he is in each present moment. Speed's memory of the past IS the past for him, and it influences every decision he makes. This is achieved through inventive editing that sees these scenes flowing in and out of one another as if the actions of the past create the effects of the present, which is of course one of the major themes of the movie. From the opening scene of the film we are experiencing Speed's memories, the Racer family's history, and Speed's present simultaneously. In Speed Racer, memory is the past is the present.
